Operating your mobile while driving is a bad habit that can (quite rightly) cause a number of unfortunate consequences, especially if you are sitting at that time on the driver's site. On the other hand, these smart machines help us greatly and save our time, for example, when we need reliable navigation that is not available to us from the passenger seat. With new technologies such as Android Auto, connecting these two worlds is even simpler, more efficient and hopefully even safer than ever before. And we do not need even a luxury car that just got out of the line. Just a little smarter mobile will be enough.
While self-handling cars are in development as well as robust testing, massive use is, however not at the table. And there we should focus to other, more accessible innovations, which makes it easier for humanity to improve its travel enjoyment.
To help with this task, the Apple and Google have introduced a sophisticated system that allows easy transfer of selected smartphone features directly to your car's dashboard. Initially, these features featured only in selected advanced models of cars, but today we have a phone that supports Android 5.0 and higher (respectively iPhone 5 and later).
There is no point in denying, the first to launch on its integrated system was Apple. Apple has introduced his CarPlay in 2013, and real use was made one year earlier than in competition - Ferrari FF was the lucky first car using it. The on-board computer, paired with iPhones, has offered a wide range of features, including a Siri assistant that can read messages or navigate among others.
It's basically simple, the main job will be on your cellphone, which through free-of-charge Android Auto applications will project or transfer the environment and selected features of your phone to your dashboard display. Everything, of course, adjusted and enlarged for easier handling and manipulation, so as not to distract the driver's attention. The main function includes well-known basic features - navigation, call handling, notes, Google Play Music, and smart assistant that Android users can know under the name of Google Now. Just connect via a standard microUSB and it is.
If your car has the best years behind you and its only functional deck is a windscreen that has two screen wipers, you will not even miss it. Google's goal is to make Android Cars useable in all conditions without a compatible car. In this case, just attach the mobile phone to the holder, run the application, and instead of the steering wheel display, look at the smaller screen of your mobile. It's not the same, but it works well and the offer is pretty clear in these circumstances.
What does Microsoft say about this technological game, which two years ago explored with very similar plans? Hard to say. There is not much to hear about Windows in cars.
Of course, the primary offer of the features mentioned above is of course Google's own, but over time, more compatible third-party applications may appear. For example, you can now use your favourite Spotify streaming service. Remarkably the notes that you can conveniently set up for a specific time as a reminder. These tasks are saved at the same time on the phone, so you will not miss them even when you are out of the car. For new models of selected cars, Google also develops an Android version of Auto that will be able to control other systems such as air conditioning or seat heating.
An important component of the application is also the ability to use voice controls to make it easier to send messages, for example, where Google already offers a proven dictation system in many local languages. Otherwise, when you connect your phone via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm jack cable, you can play navigation instructions directly through car speakers. And such scraps should only grow.
The key element is, of course, still a smartphone. The better the phone and the better connection to the internet, the better everything goes. That is what you need to think about. An overview of the cars currently supported by Android Auto can be found at the official website - Ford, Mercedes, Honda, KIA and Škoda.
